How It All Began

Stumbling upon a new hobby. What triggered 2015 as a pivotal year for my hobbies started with my 50th birthday celebration in Denver with my wife, my brother, my sister-in-law, and my nephew. We were at a mall at one point during this birthday celebration vacation, and my nephew and I broke off from the others. We passed a Brookstone store where a salesman was outside the store flying a drone around the high-ceiling mall. I thought to myself that I always wanted to own/fly/drive RC vehicles, but based on what I learned from years before, I was demotivated by the steep learning curve.

The ease-of-use of modern drones. However, the salesman convinced me that the latest drones were super easy to fly, since they had the smarts to self-balance, and you just needed to guide them where you wanted. He actually let me try it to prove his point, and sure enough I was easily flying it around with zero training! My nephew was also fascinated by it, so I bought it for him as a gift, and we flew it around the mall together!

Jumping into the hobby. When I got back home from the vacation, I started researching drones. I found that the French company Parrot had just released some really cool mini-drones with many different capabilities - and on a whim, I bought them all! Over the years, this has included many RC ("radio-controlled") vehicles that do not fly.
